Lower Zambezi National Park

The lower Zambezi is in my opinion one of the most scenic parks in Zambia and boasts fantastic safaris both on the land and on the water. When I first Visited Zambia when I was 16 I stayed at a lodge here and it’s really where my affair with this magnificent country started. Drifting down the Zambezi watching hippo pods around us, elephants bathing on the shores and hearing the lions roaring as the sun went down is a memory I shall keep and treasure forever.

The mighty Zambezi River relaxes and becomes as tame as Africa permits through this calm and lush section of the Lower Zambezi valley.

The park itself is sandwiched between mountains on one side and the river on the other, this creates a strip of land teeming with animals all thriving off lush green densely vegetated bush and each other!

Dining at Sausage Tree Camp

Here you have a very good chance of viewing Giraffe, Elephant and Lion amongst many other species. Birding is also fantastic in this area and if you like fishing, Tiger fish are abundant in the river and are exciting to catch.

The lower Zambezi has been a favourite safari destination for well over 50 years and boasts some of Zambia’s finest lodges and cuisine along with fantastic scenery and wildlife.

Again for the lower Zambezi I have selected several lodges that I have stayed at and know the owners and staff at. Kanyemba lodge is a great starting point and has a new Island camp on a private island opposite the main lodge. The cuisine has an Italian twist and the managers are fantastic hosts, this is a great gateway to the rest of the park! From here you can be transferred by boat to the lavish Sausage Tree Camp, where you will be guided by boat and vehicle through the central section of this park. Sausage Tree Camp is a very high end camp with a really quirky design, again a very special place and completely unique.

Anna Tree Camp is in the more remote end of the park and is truly wild! My mother particularly loves this camp and is very good friends with the owners and managers. If you only have a few days to spend in the lower Zambezi and are planning to visit a few parks on your trip I highly recommend this camp.
